Go East, Old Man

Heading off this morning on one more family road trip.

After a wonderful twenty-three run in Colorado, we are heading east, relocating to Washington, D.C.

... Well, that's how the post began a couple months ago on the morning of June 8, and as you can imagine it's been a rather busy time over the past seven weeks or so. It hasn't been busy in the way work and professional or personal responsibilities can be, but it has certainly been a constant flow of movement and transitions. And, now at the end of July, we are settled in Maryland, just outside of DC, and we're embracing a new life in the DMV.

It was family that took us out to Colorado twenty-years ago, and it is family that brought us to the East Coast. My wife and I were living in southern Illinois, just outside the St. Louis area when our son was born, and it was at that time, we decided we were done with the Midwest where we'd both grown up, and we were looking for a new place to work and raise a family. Having never been to Colorado before, it strangely popped up on our radar, and through a series of fortunate events, we settled for a couple decades in the Denver Tech Center where I worked and my kids attended school at Cherry Creek High School. It was the ideal place for us all.

And, now, with our kids settled in the DC area and New York City, and with several cousins living in the DMV, we decided to make the move. That decision followed a two year hiatus from the regular work life when we moved to Fort Collins in a move I deemed "the FoCo Fellowship." With a freelance gig writing about music and art for a few publications including Denver's alt-weekly Westword, and a hair-brained idea to try and write a book on Henry David Thoreau and punk rock, I "retired" from three decades of teaching English and school administration, and we moved to the funky, hip, eclectic, and close-knit small town of FoCo.

Now, that an early draft of the book is finished, and I have wrapped up the quixotic idea that I could be a full-time freelance music, arts, and culture writer, we have settled for a time on the eastern seaboard, and I realized I need to get back to the writing aspect of my "Act III."

More to come ...
